Sedation Dentistry & Anxiety-Free Dental Care

Millions of people avoid the dentist because of fear, anxiety, or past difficult experiences. At Palmetto Dental Arts, we offer several levels of sedation dentistry — sometimes called "sleep dentistry" — so that every patient can receive the care they need comfortably and without distress.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax before and during dental procedures. Depending on the level of sedation chosen, you may feel mildly relaxed and at ease, deeply drowsy, or — in the case of general anesthesia — fully asleep. Most sedation options allow you to remain conscious while feeling calm and comfortable throughout your treatment.

A local anesthetic is always administered as well, so you will not feel pain regardless of which sedation method you choose.

Sedation dentistry does not replace anesthesia — it works alongside it. You'll be relaxed and pain-free.

Types of sedation we offer

Our team will discuss each option with you to determine the best fit for your health history, anxiety level, and the procedure being performed.

NITROUS OXIDE/LAUGHING GAS - MINIMAL
Inhaled through a small mask. Takes effect within minutes, wears off quickly, and allows you to drive yourself home after the appointment. Our most commonly used option for mild anxiety.

ORAL SEDATION (MODERATE)
A prescription pill (often Halcion or a similar benzodiazepine) taken before your appointment. You'll feel drowsy and deeply relaxed. Higher doses can result in light sleep.
A driver is required.

DEEP IV Sedation (MODERATE)
Sedative medication delivered directly into the bloodstream through a vein, allowing for precise, fast-acting control. Ideal for longer or more complex procedures. A driver is required.

Who is sedation dentistry right for?

Sedation may be a good option for patients who experience any of the following:

  • Dental phobia or significant anxiety about dental visits
  • Sensitive teeth or a low pain threshold
  • A strong gag reflex that interferes with treatment
  • Difficulty sitting still for extended periods (including some patients with sensory processing differences or ADHD)
  • The need for multiple procedures completed in fewer appointments
  • Previous traumatic dental experiences

You don't need a severe phobia to benefit from sedation. Even mild anxiety can make dental care harder than it needs to be — we're here to change that.

Benefits of sedation dentistry

Less anxiety - Sedation breaks the anxiety cycle that keeps many patients from seeking care, often until small problems become serious ones.

More done in less time - Sedated patients are more comfortable for longer, allowing our team to complete more work in a single visit and reduce the total number of appointments needed.

Reduced memory of the procedure - Moderate and deeper sedation often produce an amnesic effect — many patients remember little or nothing of the appointment, which helps reduce future anxiety as well.

Frequently asked questions

Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes. Our team will review your full medical history before recommending any sedation. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are among the most widely used and well-studied methods in dentistry. IV sedation and general anesthesia require additional monitoring and planning, which we coordinate carefully.

Will I be unconscious?
Not unless you opt for general anesthesia. Nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation all allow you to remain conscious and responsive — you'll simply feel deeply relaxed, possibly drowsy or mildly amnesic.

Can I drive myself home after sedation?
Only after nitrous oxide, which clears your system quickly. Oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia all require you to arrange a driver for your appointment.

Does insurance cover sedation dentistry?
Coverage varies by plan. Nitrous oxide is often covered; oral and IV sedation may be partially covered depending on the procedure and your insurer. We are a fee for service provider so that may affect the reimbursement as well. Our team is happy to help verify your benefits before your visit.

How is "sleep dentistry" different from sedation dentistry?
"Sleep dentistry" is a colloquial term often used interchangeably with sedation dentistry. Technically, most sedation options do not involve actual sleep — they induce a state of deep relaxation. True sleep (unconsciousness) only occurs with general anesthesia.
